White bikini: what happens when it gets in the water?
A white bikini may look perfectly opaque when dry. But what happens when it gets wet?
This was one of the first things we wanted to check with the DERIVA Set. We tested it in the pool, photographing the wet fabric both when worn and laid on the pool edge.
In this article, we show the results and explain what details to check when choosing a white swimsuit.
Why can a white bikini become transparent?
Transparency depends mainly on the fabric's construction, the presence of a lining, and how much the material is stretched when worn.
Water can change the way light passes through the fibers, making some fabrics less opaque than when they are dry.
So it's not just a matter of thickness: the swimsuit's construction and how the materials behave in real-life conditions matter.
Our pool test
During the development of the DERIVA Set, we paid particular attention to the opacity of the white fabric.
The bikini is made with three layers of fabric in the top and two layers in the bottoms, designed to improve opacity without compromising comfort.
But we didn't want to stop at assessing the swimsuit when dry.
We conducted real-life tests in the pool, photographing the bikini when worn and wet, to see how the material behaved when in contact with water.
In the conditions documented by the photographs, the white fabric remains opaque, with no transparency in the visible areas.
The photographs document the performance of the DERIVA Set during our pool test, showing the opacity of the white fabric under test conditions.

What to check before buying a white bikini?
If you are choosing a white bikini online, there are three things that can help you better assess the product:
- Wet photographs: look for real images of the swimsuit worn after contact with water.
- Lining and construction: check if the brand provides information about the fabric layers and reinforced areas.
- Fit: keep in mind that overly stretched material can become less opaque. Always consult the size guide.

There is no need to give up on white for fear of transparency. You simply need to know more about the swimsuit you are buying.
For us at DERIVA, design also starts with this: creating a bikini designed not only to be worn, but to be truly used in the water.
